Scottish firm boosts its Green Credentials with the installation of a Biomass Boiler

Scottish firm DM Design has just invested £250,000 in a biomass boiler at its head office in Cumbernauld, Scotland. The Fitted Bedroom specialists will now incredibly save the equivalent of 50 large skiploads of landfill each year. The ultra-high-spec 150kW boiler is in fact cleverly fed with wood from old kitchen and bedroom units which have been removed from customers’ homes.

DM Design is one of Scotland’s leading providers of kitchens, bedrooms and bathrooms. They deliver high-quality designs to customers and have completed over 100,000 room transformations in over 30 years.

They take environmental issues seriously and, as a lot of their work involves manufacturing, they ensure that they do their bit to be environmentally conscious. The boiler is fed with a variety of old wooden doors, floors, worktops and offcuts from the houses that they renovate and it serves to heat the factory. Impressively, it’s just one of many practises that they undertake to reduce their carbon footprint and preserve the environment.

The unit also assists in removing dust ensuring the 30-strong factory team have a clean working environment. Operations director Ben Taylor is delighted with the installation. He enthused, “Putting in a biomass boiler was a no brainer. It saves 50 large skips-worth of waste going to landfill, heats our entire factory and lowers our heating bill by up to £10,000 a year.”

The company has five dedicated showrooms in Scotland – Cumbernauld, Kirkcaldy, Aberdeen and most recently, Livingston and Glasgow. All of their showrooms display their most popular bathroom, kitchen and bedroom designs, with trained experts also on hand to give any advice that’s needed.

Our local community is at the centre of what we do and we sponsor a number of local clubs and societies. Charity work is also a core part of the DM Design ethos and we regularly participate in charity fundraising events.

Along with their environmental work, the company is also active in the local communities it serves. They’ve worked with the Beatson Cancer Charity, Scotia Aid, The STV Appeal and Cash for Kids, as well as hosting fundraising dinners for Epilepsy Scotland and the Nepal Earthquake Appeal. Founder of DM Design, Donald MacLeod, is a proud supporter of Nordoff Robins, a charity that provides music therapy services to adults and children throughout the UK.
