Important Food Hygiene Practices When Working in a Commercial Kitchen

If you work in a commercial kitchen then you will know how important it is for you to maintain a very high standard of hygiene at all times. This is easier said than done if you are trying to balance a hundred things at once, but there are things that you can do to make the whole thing easier.

Clothing

The clothing that you wear needs to be clean and it also needs to be very protective as well. If you have a team of staff then they need to be wearing protective clothing as well. When your team of staff are preparing food they also need to keep their hair tied back and it also helps for them to wear a hair net as well. They also need to avoid wearing jewellery or watches as well, because this can easily trap food and debris from around the kitchen. They can also pose as a health hazard because jewellery can easily get caught on various kitchen equipment.

Handwashing

Washing your hands is very important if you want to prevent harmful bacteria. This is even the case when you touch any catering equipment as this can be a breeding ground for bacteria. It’s super important that staff wash their hands before they prepare any food and after touching raw food as well. They also need to wash their hands after they handle any food waste and after they clean a surface. Cash registers, light switches and even door handles can also harvest bacteria as well, so this is super important.

Disposable Towels

If you or your staff have wet hands then disposable towels are great here. The main reason for this is because bacteria can spread very easily on wet hands and disposable towels are one of the best ways for you to keep the kitchen clean and it is also a great way for you to really make sure that your team are following the best hygiene practices. Of course, a lot of people think that hand dryers are convenient and they are but they can spread bacteria in a kitchen so they should be avoided.

Spillages

If you spill something on the floor then this needs to be cleaned up in the most practical way. If you spill oil for example then this will be treated differently when compared to water or an alcoholic beverage. Knowing how to deal with spillages is very important and if you have spilt something that could be dangerous then washing your hands after is crucial. There may be other practices that you need to follow if you have open wounds on your hands as well so this is something that you do need to think about.

So staying safe in a commercial kitchen is very easy once you are in a routine and you would be surprised at how easy it is for you to keep your entire team safe. If you are not able to sustain a clean and operable kitchen then this will not only get you a bad reputation but it will also eventually lead to your establishment closing down, and this is something that you’ll want to avoid.
