Go the extra mile

Most people tend to think of their work day as finishing the moment that the clock hits 5 PM. And sure, there’s nothing wrong with that. But if you’re stopping something right in the middle of a task then that doesn’t really show that much of a commitment to your work. Go the extra mile and make sure that, if you can, you get everything finished before you leave. Things like that and being at work a little early so that you’re ready to start working right away can show your employer how willing you are to do what’s best for the business as a whole.

Of course, if you want to show your employer that you’re ready to create more value for them, the best way to do that is just to talk to them. Ask them how you can improve and what advice they’d give for doing so. What do they want you to do in order to be better at your job and be a more valuable asset to their business as a whole?

While it’s incredibly important to show an employer that you’re willing to go the extra mile that you’re a valuable part of their business, you should never end up pushing yourself too far. For one thing, if you’re working more hours than you’re contracted to work without overtime pay, then your employer could well be breaking the law. Not only that but you’re going to end up putting yourself in serious danger of burning out if you try to take on too much. Make sure that you create a careful balance between showing your value and focussing on your wellbeing.
