Lookers aims to steer more women towards the motor industry

At a recent talk at the Manchester’s Whalley Range 11-18 Girls’ School (WRHS), Adam Carney, Group Diversity Manager at Lookers, was keen to encourage girls to apply for roles at the company as well as consider a career in the motoring industry.

The school was a fitting setting for such a talk to take place, especially due to the fact that the phrase ‘We strive to educate, inspire and empower young women to be the next generation leaders’ is etched proudly on walls around the establishment.

During his visit, Adam encouraged those in attendance to look into the Lookers’ Executive Placement opportunities. Perpetual future was a key theme covered during the Group Diversity Manager’s talk too, while digital sales and eCommerce, connected, self-driving and electric cars, plus non-traditional roles in the motor industry such as marketing, IT, finance and HR were all discussed in detail as well.

Following the talk, Adam reflected: “We want to inspire girls and women to open their minds to a career within the motor trade and we hope this morning has offered a helpful and thought-provoking insight into the diverse range of opportunities available at Lookers and within the industry.”

When it comes to those looking at a career route into the motor industry, many may be of the belief that only practical roles will exist. However, Adam pointed out that girls could have a suitable skill set which would excel further in so many enriching roles seen throughout the sector.

Indeed, efforts are being made to get more women into the motor trade. There’s the 30% Club which aims to increase the number of women on FTSE-100 boards to at least 30%, as well as the UK Automotive 30% Club and the 30:30:30 campaign. Set up in collaboration with education charity Speakers for Schools, the UK Automotive 30% Club campaign will see 30 industry leaders give speeches to 30 secondary schools across the country, followed by 30 executive job shadowing placements for selected students.

Those looking for advice on a career in the motor industry are encouraged to call into one of the 154 Lookers dealerships found across the UK to receive tips and guidance.
