You get to work the hours that you want, can eat at your desk, can have a break whenever you want, and don’t answer to anyone. If you want to work from home, then you need to ensure that you have the space to do so. If you have a spare room in your home, then this could easily be turned into a home office, but if not, then you’re going to need to put a little more thought into your plans. You could put a desk and filing cabinet in another room in your home if you have the space, but you need to think about whether or not this is a sensible idea. After all, it’s going to get pretty hard to concentrate on work if you’re sat in the living room with your partner and children while the television is on.

This leads me swiftly to point two; Is this going to work with your family? Although your partner may say that they’re okay with you launching your own business, you need to properly consider the impact that this is going to have on your family. Not only will you be busy a large portion of the day, but you are also going to be taking up space in the home while doing so. If you have small children that aren’t at school yet, then working from home is going to be difficult for you and them.
- Discipline
Working from home requires a lot of discipline and motivation, so you need to be honest with yourself about whether or not you have what it takes to get the work done. There is going to be a lot at home to distract you from work, and if you don’t have anybody making you get jobs done, then you might procrastinate all day. If you continue to do this, then your business is going to fail, so don’t start one unless you know that you will work hard.

If you’re working from home, then you need to assess the risks as a boss would do in any workplace. You should also make sure that your home is properly insured, as you will have all of your office equipment in your home, as well as all of your other belongings, and all of that could be lost in a house fire or if you get burgled.
